Which Leader Is Speaking?

An Identity Signal Check for Experienced Leaders

Are you leading from who you are now, who you had to become in a prior season, or who you are still intentionally building? Free, no sign-in, no purchase.

  • How do I know who I really am?
  • Am I leading from who I am now, or who I had to be?
  • Am I supposed to find myself, or build myself?

Why this exists

The role keeps working while the signals get harder to read.

Experienced leaders rarely lose identity all at once. More often the role keeps working while the inner signals get harder to read. This guide has one job: help you read those signals in the moment.

It is not a personality assessment, not a values worksheet, not a replacement for The Identity Reset, and not permission to treat every feeling as truth.

Signal one

Where are you getting the signal?

Internal signals need examination. Intuition can carry wisdom, but it can also carry fear, fatigue, ego, old wounds, or residue from a prior role. Run a source check.

Conviction
Would I still believe this if nobody rewarded me for it?
Values
Does this match the principles I claim when nothing is at stake?
Evidence
What pattern in my actual decisions supports this conclusion?
Trusted people
What do people who know me beyond my role consistently see?
Pressure
Does this signal get clearer under pressure, or more reactive?

Prompt

Which signal have you been treating as truth without checking its source?

Signal two

Is this who you are now, or who you learned to be?

Past versions of you solved real problems. The problem begins when yesterday’s adaptation keeps voting in today’s decisions.

Is this still conviction, or a successful old adaptation that has outlived its assignment?

Five signs

  1. 1Guilt about slowing down, even when speed no longer improves the outcome.
  2. 2Solving problems because being needed still feels like proof of value.
  3. 3Defending a habit by pointing to what it produced years ago.
  4. 4Feeling disloyal when a new season requires a different version of strength.
  5. 5Being able to explain what the old rule protected, but not what it protects now.

Prompt

Name one leadership behavior that was once necessary but may no longer deserve automatic authority.

Find or build

Some identity is discovered. Some is built.

Do not force a false choice. Some of who you are is found; some is built through repeated choices.

Discover

  • Temperament and natural patterns
  • Values that keep resurfacing
  • Strengths independent of title
  • Experiences that shaped your judgment
  • What gives life before applause arrives

Build

  • Habits and practices
  • Boundaries
  • Emotional maturity
  • Skills deliberately acquired
  • The kind of person repeated choices make you

Prompt

What are you trying to find that actually needs to be built through practice?

Prompt

What are you trying to build that may already be true and simply needs to be trusted?

Three tests

Pressure. Release. Evidence.

Pressure Test

  • — What happens when something important is threatened?
  • — What are you protecting?
  • — Is the reaction conviction, or defense?

Release Test

Imagine the title, role, audience, or approval disappearing.

  • — What would still matter?
  • — What strength would you still use?
  • — What responsibility would you still choose if nobody saw it?

Evidence Test

  • — Which recent decision best reflects the leader you say you are?
  • — Where did you act against that identity?
  • — What repeated behavior would count as better evidence next month?

05 · The 20-minute Identity Signal Check

Seven questions. One honest sitting.

  1. 1What decision, tension, or leadership behavior am I examining?
  2. 2What does the old version of me want to do automatically?
  3. 3What did that response originally protect or accomplish?
  4. 4What has materially changed since that response became useful?
  5. 5What do my current values, evidence, and trusted relationships say now?
  6. 6If I were not protecting my reputation as “the kind of leader who _____,” what might I choose?
  7. 7What is one action I can take this week that creates evidence for the leader I am becoming?

Read your result

What your answers are pointing to.

Mostly approval, title, or being needed
External confirmation may be acting as identity evidence.
Defending what worked in an earlier season
A successful adaptation may be past its assignment.
You know what matters, but your habits contradict it
Probably an operating rule issue, not an identity mystery.
You can name what remains true and what must be practiced
The healthy work of both discovering and building.
Your identity is not proven by what you can say about yourself. It is clarified by what remains true when the role changes, and strengthened by the choices that keep making it true.

What comes next

Choose the next step that fits what you found.

  • If role and identity are fused

Separate the two with the Identity Separation Worksheet, available in the Leading Edge Library.

    See the worksheet
  • If old success rules are running current behavior

Name and rewrite them with the Identity Operating Rules Audit.

    See the audit
  • If the gap is deeper

Work through it fully with The Identity Reset mini-course.
